The Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School, Inc. (S.T.A.R.S.) was
incorporated in 1984 in Sioux City, Iowa to provide the experience of therapeutic
and recreational horseback riding to persons with physical, cognitive or emotional disabilities. Riders with
the S.T.A.R.S. program learn horsemanship skills within a safe and supportive
environment. Our big red barn was donated to the program along with the 5
acres it sits on. Thanks to all volunteer help, our first class was held
in 1998 in our
new state-of-the-art facility.
In addition to the recreational benefits of learning this unique sport, there
are significant physical changes which the horse's rhythmic movement can
produce. These include improvements in balance, posture, muscle tone, relaxation
and coordination, and increases in joint range of motion. Emotional and psychological
changes, such as increased trust, self-confidence and self-esteem follow
naturally from mastering the techniques associated with these large animals.
Classes are held year round for riders with disabilities, and many volunteers are
needed to assist with the riding classes and to help with many other aspects
of program operation.
